"Mixed Media Version 1.5:
Yellow Journalism"

Update 9/1/04 MIX V1.5 will be in
"Square-Carre-Cuadrado"
Museo de la Cultura,
Valencia, Venezuela Nov-Dec 2004

This artwork really pushes the definition of a quilt. It's still three layers, but I'm using computer wire as my thread and a four-inch-long sail repair needle and leather palm to quilt with.

The top and bottom layers are cotton and the 'batting' is foam. A second 'batting' of cardboard is required to give the piece extra stability.

Update 9/20/03 "Mixed Media V1.1"
juried into My World in Black & White
Update 11/9/04 "Holiday Boutique"
Zimmerli Art Museum
New Brunswick, NJ Nov 2004

Materials: cotton & sheer fabrics, computer, audio, and video media, slide, film, computer and electrical wires.

Techniques: hand quilted, machine & hand appliquéd, embellished.

Statement: "Mixed Media" has many meanings including this style of artwork. As a metaphor for the 'mixed' state of bipolar where there is rapid vacillation between depression and mania the fabric foundation of this series is the polar-opposite color selection of black and white.

The embellished items are all forms of media--computer, video, and audio. Carrying the 'mixed' double entendre further, in computer terms, we 'read' and 'write' to the floppy and hard drive media. Red is a reoccurring color choice within the computer industry, showing up again and again in logos, print ads, and labels.

The shapes of the embellishments and appliqués are either circles or squares/rectangles. Some of the items such as the VHS tape, floppy diskettes, and cassette tapes have circular forms with in the box casings. The objects are placed one on top of the other to hint at the intermingling of opposite mental states.

Mix V1.2: Read/Write refers to recording data on the various (mixed) forms of computer media. It is the most autobiographical of my computer series in that I spend a good portion of my day in front of my laptop reading and writing.

Along the bottom in lettered beads I've spelled out, "I READ I WRITE I SEW I QUILT". Sewing Daily/Daily Sewing keeps me balanced within the Mixed State of bipolar disorder.

"Incredible collage of items that affect your life. Glad to see you found an outlet to deal with it. Application of embellishments very creative and well done. Piece is truly a work of art." - Sandra Dorrbecker, NQA Certified Judge
"Mixed Media Version 1.3:
Black & Blue"

18”w x 24”h x 1.5”d © November 2003 Available

Update 11/9/04 "Mixed Media V1.3"
will be in "Art Ability"
Bryn Mawr Rehabilitation Hospital
Malvern, PA November 2004-January 2005

Materials: cotton & sheer fabrics; recycled computer, audio, and video media, slide, film, negatives, computer and electrical wires

Techniques: machine quilted, machine & hand appliquéd, embellished.

Statement: "Mixed Media" is a commentary on how so few of our entertainment, computer, and electronic media actually work together. The reference is to the 'mixed' state of bipolar disorder - the rapid vacillation between depression and mania. Depression is often referred to as a Blue period where everything looks Black.

The embellished items are all forms of media--computer, camera, video, and audio. There's even a used Moody Blue's 8-Track tape that was ordered through eBay in the upper right corner. The slide is of "Keyboard Lockup Version 1.2: Blue Screen of Death" (BSofD is a computer programmer's term for when the computer 'freezes' and you're left staring at a blank blue screen.)

"Mixed Media Version 1.4:
Green with Computer Envy"

18”w x 24”h x 1.5”d © March 2004 Available

Update 11/9/04 "Holiday Boutique"
Zimmerli Art Museum
New Brunswick, NJ Nov 2004

Materials: cotton, netting & sheer fabrics; recycled computer media & components, recycled plastic anti-static bag, computer and electrical wires

Techniques: machine & hand quilted, machine & hand appliquéd, embellished.

Statement: In addition to being "Green with Computer Envy", this piece in the "Mixed Media" series is alluding to the 'Green' issues of our landfills becoming overrun with our rapidly obsolete technology. Many of the components that make up the motherboards and adapters are toxic when burned.
