| "[The gardens cover] fifty acres of floral finery offering
spectacular views along meandering paths and expansive lawns. In 1904, the
concept of The Butchart
Gardens began with an effort to beautify a worked-out quarry site on
the 130-acre estate of Mr. and Mrs. Robert P. Butchart, pioneers in the
manufacture of Portland.
"As Mr. Butchart exhausted the limestone in the quarry near their house, his enterprising wife, Jenny, conceived an unprecedented plan for refurbishing the bleak pit that resulted. From farmland nearby she requisitioned tons of topsoil, had it brought to in by horse and cart, and used it to line the floor of the abandoned quarry. Little by little, under Jenny Butchart's personal supervision, the abandoned quarry bloomed as the spectacular Sunken Garden. "Their endeavor became a family commitment to horticulture and hospitality spanning more than 90 years and delighting visitors from all over the world. From the exquisite Sunken Garden to the charming Rose Garden, this 50-acre show place still maintains the gracious traditions of the past, in one of the loveliest corners in the world." - BG website www.butchartgardens.com |
| During the summer of 1998 we chartered a
sailboat and cruised in the waters of southern BC. When we visited the Butchart
Gardens, I was overwhelmed with their beauty. Once home, I designed a quilt of
my impressions of the estate and grounds. This is the 2nd quilt I have finished.
All of them are originals. - CLV
“Your quilt is truly lovely, what a lovely interpretation you have done of the gardens. I love how you have used the fabric truly as your canvas, using just the right scale of design in each spot. We are indeed honored to have your quilt grace our show.“ - Carla McIvor, Williams Lakes, British Columbia “I love the quilt you made of the Butchart Gardens. I work with a fellow who worked there for years and he loves it too. You have done a beautiful job.” Giselle Brewster, Qualicum Beach, British Columbia |
