Fathom, llc, a wildlife preservation organization based in Anchorage, Alaska requested that I create a series of art quilts for their online gift shop at www.wildlifepreservation.com. Since I've always had an interest in elephants, I selected endangered African Elephants as the theme for the collection. The series includes three sunset and three twilight scenes.

To create "Lone Calf at Sunset", I used traditional techniques of reverse appliqué, embroidery, trapunto, and quilting create the three dimensional image. Then special fabric paints and pens were used to enhance the shadows and depth of the piece.

In this series, I wanted to show these majestic creatures in the beauty of their surroundings. At the same time, I wanted to leave the viewer with the lingering question, "What if this is the last elephant left standing?"
